A farewell to the Jetta Dragons/Cougar Dragons

Alas all good things come to end eventually and 2015 will see the end of the Killarney Dragon Boat Racing Club. For now at any rate. On-going commitments elsewhere and a lack of interest, not by students, but by adults, ensures the Dragons will be put on indefinite hiatus.

It has been a real pleasure and honour to be involved with so many terrific students, an incredible sponsor--Clarkdale Motors Volkswagen--and a fabulous paddling organization--the Dragon Zone. With any luck the KDBRC will rise from the ashes and take flight again.

Thank you to everyone who has been involved over the past 8 years, especially coaches Todd Wong, Steven Wong, Michele Ta, and Gayle Gordon. You helped bring skill, passion, and a lot of fun to an incredible group of students. THANK YOU.

And a BIG thank you to all the paddlers who made me smile so many times.

Paddles Up!

The 2014 Season Comes to an End with the Rio Tinto Alcan Dragon Boat Festival

The Killarney Dragon Boat Racing Club finished another season on the weekend racing as the Clarkdale Jetta Dragons at the Rio Tinto Alcan Dragon Boat Festival. Two fabulous days of camaraderie, friendship and racing. We didn't end as well as we had hoped but none of that matters when we see know we did our best, paddled our hearts out and had fun. Two 5th place finishes on Saturday put us into the C/D/E Divisional Semi Final on Sunday morning. We place as the top 3rd place finisher of the 3 heats and found ourselves in the C final by 3 seconds. The C Division proved to be very competitive and we placed 7th in the final. Not where we had hoped to be, but satisfied with our effort and team spirit.

My thanks to a wonderful team for their true spirit and pride. Killarney is very proud of you. the 2014 Clarkdale Jetta Dragons are: Winsey Chiu; Afiq 'Danny' Hisham; Annie Lam; Samantha Lay; Annie Lee; Annie Lei; Michael Lei; Karen Leon; Christopher Leung; Natalie Lim; Felix Ma; Rachel Ma;  Jasper Nidoy; Nathan Ng; Kavita Padhiar; Matteo Smith; Dustin Trinh; Samantha Wong; Vic Wu; Benson Yau; Amy Zheng; and Bonnie Zheng.  Our coach this year was Gayle Gordon and our Founder Manager is Mr. M.

Thanks to our sponsor: Clarkdale Volkswagen; and our supporters: Killarney Parents Advisory Council; Killarney Student Council; and the Killarney Dragon Boat Racing Club.

Another successful season

The KILLARNEY DRAGON BOAT RACING CLUB (KDBRC) just keeps getting better. This year, our 7th, we floated two boats for the Rio Tinto Alcan Dragon Boat Festival. We were pleased to welcome our new coach, the outstanding paddler and junior coach, Gayle Gordon to our team. Gayle brought a wealth of experience and enthusiasm to the KDBRC family. We also welcomed Ms. Helen Wu, a student teacher at Killarney Secondary, to our family, and welcomed back former coach Michelle Ta. 42 students from Killarney, Kitsilano and Churchill secondary schools participated in the KDBRC this year. We raced in 3 regattas and placed well in each of them. We thank Clarkdale Volkswagen for their continuing help and sponsorship, and we look forward to more successes in the years to come.
